Sherlock Holmes - out Dec 25, 2009

Sherlock Holmes has made his reputation finding the truth at the heart of the most complex mysteries. With the aid of Dr. John Watson, his trusted ally, the renowned "consulting detective" is unequaled in his pursuit of criminals of every stripe, whether relying on his singular powers of observation, his remarkable deductive skills, or the blunt force of his fists.

But now a storm is gathering over London, a threat unlike anything that Holmes has ever confronted...and just the challenge he's looking for.

After a string of brutal, ritualistic murders, Holmes and Watson arrive just in time to save the latest victim and uncover the killer: the unrepentant Lord Blackwood. As he approaches his scheduled hanging, Blackwood--who has terrorized inmates and jailers alike with his seeming connection to dark and powerful forces--warns Holmes that death has no power over him and, in fact, his execution plays right into Blackwood's plans.

And when, by all indications, Blackwood makes good on his promise, his apparent resurrection panics London and confounds Scotland Yard. But to Holmes, the game is afoot.

Racing to stop Blackwood's deadly plot, Holmes and Watson plunge into a world of the dark arts and startling new technologies, where logic is sometimes the best crime-fighting weapon...but where a good right hook will often do the job.

In a dynamic new portrayal of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous character, Robert Downey Jr. plays the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. Revealing fighting skills as powerful as his famous intellect, Holmes employs his own unique methods to get to the heart of a case, traveling where no one else would think to go to find what others cannot see.

Jude Law portrays Watson, Holmes's longtime colleague, who is joining him in what may be their last case before the doctor starts a new life as a married man. Rachel McAdams is Irene Adler, a woman from America, who is as alluring as she is dangerous, and whose tempestuous relationship with the detective has become the one puzzle he cannot solve. Mark Strong plays Lord Blackwood, whose own intellect, combined with merciless ambition, makes him a formidable adversary. Eddie Marsan appears as Scotland Yard's Inspector Lestrade, who is both impressed and frustrated by the great Sherlock Holmes.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a Silver Pictures Production, in association with Wigram Productions, a Guy Ritchie Film, "Sherlock Holmes." Ritchie directed the film from a screenplay by Michael Robert Johnson and Anthony Peckham and Simon Kinberg, screen story by Lionel Wigram and Michael Robert Johnson. Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey and Dan Lin produced the film, with Michael Tadross and Bruce Berman serving as executive producers and Steve Clark-Hall co-producing.

The accomplished behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-winning director of photography Philippe Rousselot ("A River Runs Through It"), Oscar-nominated production designer Sarah Greenwood ("Atonement," "Pride & Prejudice"), editor James Herbert ("RocknRolla"), and Oscar-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan ("A Room With a View"). The music is by Oscar winner and multiple Oscar-nominated composer Hans Zimmer ("The Lion King," "Gladiator").

"Sherlock Holmes" will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

The film has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for intense sequences of violence and action, some startling images and a scene of suggestive material.

From Shout! Factory

Before Arachnophobia and Eight Legged Freaks...there was Kingdom of the Spiders.

While sophisticated digital effects have made it possible for swarms of beetles, bees and other insects to rampage across movie screens throughout the last decade, back in the Seventies filmmakers had no such tool. Films about nature seeking revenge were all the rage thirty years ago, and the 1977 cult film Kingdom of the Spiders starring William Shatner pulled no punches those were live tarantulas crawling all over the set...and the cast!

Featuring all-new anamorphic widescreen transfer of the film, this Special Edition DVD release contains an all-new interview with William Shatner; an in-depth commentary featuring director John Bud Cardos, producer Igor Kantor, spider wrangler Jim Brockett and cinematographer John Morrill, moderated by HOSTEL producer Scott Spiegel and Lee Christian; rare behind-the-scenes footage; Jim Brockett: Spider Wrangler featurette; poster gallery and the original theatrical trailer. Soon the remaining residents of the town must barricade themselves at lodge of Emma Washburn (Lieux Dressler) lodge in an effort to save themselves from the eight-legged invaders in the ultimate man versus spider showdown.

Fear Clinic - Episode 1 review

Honest, well acted horror from the masters themselves. Finally we are given a horror show that actually focuses on the storyline more than just throw blood around the set and mix in some CGI effects.

Robert Englund, Kane Hodder and Danielle Harrison have come together and created horror gold. Taking advantage of the internet as a delivery medium the series "Fear Clinic" explores phobias as Dr Andover (Robert Englund) utilizes his unorthodox methods to cure his patients... one way or the other.

If you're tired of watching bad remakes of Japanese horror movies, rehashed, retold versions of movies that have already been done or so called horror that isn't worth watching, then Fear Clinic is for you.

If you suffer from Hydrophobia (the fear of water), then you will really be squirming in your chair. If you are not afraid of the subject, you may be after watching the episode.

The most amazing aspect of this show is that you can tell the cast is enjoying themselves as the show progresses. This is not a script that some actors were handed and they are earning their paycheck. This show is the result of three horror experts being involved in a project they themselves believe in. Well written scripts, incredible directing and insane camera angles all come together to bring us the new "must see" horror show.

    Check out the show here.

Our full interview report will be published closer to the actual release date, but here is a summary of what was discussed.

Fear Clinic is an episodic web series made up of 8-10 minute shorts about Dr. Andover (Robert Englund), who treats patients suffering from phobias. His unorthodox methods never fail, ever. You are either cured or you die. Kane Hodder plays an....

Interview: David Johnson (screenwriter for Orphan)

MetalLife.com Interview With David Johnson (screenwriter for Orphan)
    By: Terry Bunch

    1. Orphan is based on a story by yourself and Alex Mace. For the benefit of our readers, who is Alex Mace?

David. Alex is an executive at Appian Way, the production company that hired me to write the script. He wrote a 10-page treatment that served as the basis for my screenplay. I was given the first three pages of the treatment and asked to come up with an ending. After I was hired, they gave me the rest of the treatment and I was able to then merge my ending into the story outline that Alex had written.

    2. Without giving away anything, was there a specific reason you chose to write about a "creepy little girl"? Often, children are scarier than adults in movies and the formula has been successful in the past.

David. I've been a big fan of the "evil child" sub-genre ever since I saw THE BAD SEED in college. So when presented with the opportunity to write this movie, I jumped at it. The idea of the "evil child" basically flies in the face of our instinctive drive to nurture and protect our offspring, which makes it very fertile ground for sowing horror.

    3. Were you involved in any filming decisions? Did you have any say in how the script was interpreted?

David. My opinions were definitely solicited during the pre-production phase. I had a very good collaborative experience with everyone involved. But ultimately, we were all pretty much on the same page in terms of how to translate the script to screen.

    4. Did you have any interaction with director Jaume Collet-Serra during the making of the movie?

David. Unfortunately, the movie was shot during the recent WGA strike, so I was not able to be involved with the actual shooting until very near the end, but Jaume and I collaborated extensively before the strike. He put together a visual treatment of what he wanted the movie to look like and as soon as I saw it, I knew the script was in good hands. He's a great director and a real pleasure to work with.

    5. When you were writing the story, did you have any specific people in mind that you would have liked to have seen cast in any of the roles?

David. I don't usually write with actors in mind, but for some reason, when I was writing the character of Sister Abigail, I kept hearing CCH Pounder's voice in my head saying her dialogue. I'm a big fan of hers and so at some point I just gave in to the voice in my head and purposefully wrote the role for her. When it came time to cast the part, I shared my thoughts on it with Jaume and the producers and I just got lucky. She was available and agreed to do it.
